Acting Locally on Climate

Connecting people and solutions to meet the Global Challenge

Held together by a fabric of grounded communities the Gold Coast is one of Australia’s most beautiful cities, surrounded by world class golden beaches and world heritage listed rainforests. The impacts of climate change threaten much of what makes the Gold Coast so special. With so much of the city nestled on a thin strip of land between the hinterland and the ocean our communities are at increased risk of flooding and fires, devastating cyclones and coastal erosion.

Recognising the risks from climate change to our way of life, a number of community groups and leaders have come together to work on local solutions to the climate crisis. Our mission is simple, we support our community to come together to take local action to stop runaway climate change. We are a volunteer led network of diverse grassroots groups who support one another to have a big impact fostering solutions all Gold Coasters can support.

Our vision is to preserve our beautiful communities and the natural environment we inhabit for future generations and to play our part in preventing the worst of the climate crisis.

In Sept 20 2019, the School Strike 4 Climate held one of the largest climate mobilisations in Australia’s history with thousands of school students and their supporters taking to the streets calling for urgent climate action from all politicians. The Gold Coast event was the biggest climate action ever held in our city. Covid-19 has restricted our ability to get on the streets, hold our Government accountable and demand action. In compliance with Covid safe guidelines we will be taking to the streets again this May 21 and need your help to make it successful.

Join our August webinar. Griffith University experts discuss the gap between climate commitments and climate action, the role of universities and ways in which the university and communities can collaborate to help close the climate action gap. Our panelists are all members of the leadership group for Griffith University's recently launched Climate Action Beacon.

The Gold Coast Climate Action Network acknowledges and pays respect to the Kombumerri people of the Yugambeh language region of the Gold Coast and all their descendants both past and present.  We also acknowledge the many Aboriginal people from other regions as well as Torres Strait and South Sea Islander people who now live in the local area and have made an important contribution to the community.
